Google Socratic – AI based homework assistance

Just like us professionals, school students are faced with a challenge that has never been seen before. Over the next few weeks, if the development of coronavirus does not change, millions of pupils will have to stay at home in Germany. A great challenge, but also an opportunity, because the Google App Socratic offers AI-based support for pupils.

As the Google Watch Blog has pointed out, a lot is currently changing in our education system and you have to think outside the box to find the best solution for the current situation. Such a solution comes from Google. In 2019 the tech giant has taken over App Socratic. Using artificial intelligence, this helps to solve tasks from numerous areas.

The process is very simple. Photograph the task and receive solution aids through the AI platform. Supported by Google AI, Socratic’s app has meanwhile evolved from a community solution to an intelligent helper for students.

Homework and exercises from many subjects can be photographed and the artificial intelligence analyzes and then solves them. In the process, the exact solution path, including additional information, is provided. Google remains true to its search engine past. The AI in the app transforms the tasks into concrete questions and then searches the net for possible solutions. In the end, a solution appears, which draws on sources such as Wikipedia, YouTube and various forums.

The app is a source of new ideas, especially in logical problems from mathematics and physics. The developers say:

“This learning app, powered by Google AI, helps you understand your school work at a high school and university level. Ask Socratic a question and the app will find the best online resources for you to learn the concepts. Socratic supports most high school subjects.”

The most important thing about the app is that the learners are not only presented with the solutions, but that the solution path and the background of the solution is also shown. This way they can understand the answers and work through the tasks in a comprehensible way. This is an extreme advantage in the current time, because the helpful explanations of teachers have to be omitted due to the schools closed down by the coronavirus.

Innovation profile: Socratic by Google

Homework help is nothing new and the market is booming. Whether it’s explanatory videos on YouTube or digital tutors, digitisation has reached the education industry at least at the students’ desks. But what about the innovation profile?

Analysis by AI is something completely new, which completely redefines the way of learning. The web as a source of knowledge is here redefined and interpreted by Google. Of course, as usual, this also creates a high uncertainty, as many will rely on the solutions of the app without reflecting themselves. Therefore the conflict content is also quite high, as it can be criticized that the students will adopt the solutions without reflecting on them themselves. The complexity however is extremely low. Simply scan and use the interpreted solution – all through a user interface that is as simple as possible.

Conclusion: Socratic by Google transfers the homework into a new age. Google is making full use of its past capabilities to provide students with an even better opportunity to learn independently and develop their individual skills.
