Things got a bit quieter around Magic Leap. The great hope of the AR market briefly disappeared from the surface of the media landscape after a few problems. But now they are back and with a hefty injection of cash, the company that wanted to revolutionize augmented reality with their headsets and apps could finally realize their vision.
Their new headset Magic Leap 2, is – unlike their first attempt, which was derided in part for looks and functionality- intended for businesses, but may quickly appeal to the general public as well. Focusing on corporate experts is a strategy that Google also chose after its first failed attempts at AR.
Magic Leap’s new and completely revamped hardware is expected to hit the market next year and will now finally bridge the gap between the virtual and analog worlds.
Magic Leap’s $500 million in financial support is intended to improve its oft-criticized slow product development and drive the launch of the improved headset into new markets.
“This more advanced headset boasts critical updates that make it more immersive and even more comfortable, with leading optics, the largest field of view in the industry, and dimming-a first-to-market innovation that enables the headset to be used in brightly lit settings, in addition to a significantly smaller and lighter form factor,” – Peggy Johnson, CEO Magic Leap

But even though the new headset is a good step forward, the company’s current AR solutions, as well as those of its competitors, are still far from reaching their potential.
