Facebook goes meta. The fact that Facebook sees the future in virtual reality is already shown by the reports of the last few months. Many years after buying Oculus, the social media giant began experimenting with Social VR. But a lot has happened since the initial coverage, including at Medialist, and now the company is getting serious. As the first rumors already suspected, however, the company is getting serious and choosing a more fitting name to the metaverse. The company Facebook is now called Meta and wants to invest billions in the virtual world.
Already a few weeks ago Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will become a Metaverse company, now he announced the next step to the platform of social interaction at Facebook’s Connect conference and announced the new name. Virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and many many more elements will shape the metaverse of the tech giant and herald a start of a whole new way of interaction.
The basis of the developments is said to be the VR platform Horizon, which was launched a long time ago, where users are to create their own virtual spaces to experience adventures or interact with each other. Horizon Workrooms, at least in beta, has already enabled users to create their own conference rooms, which should transform virtual working. Now, in addition, the Horizon Marketplace for NFTs and merchandise will launch soon. Here, Meta shows its intention to completely transform the real world into virtual reality.
But the Facebook Papers and the negative reporting about the social media giant cannot be left out. It almost seems like a welcome diversion from the current scandal, but Mark Zuckerberg emphasizes that security and privacy will be more in focus this time.
In addition to first glimpses into the new world of the Meta Group, hardware and interaction strategies, such as a wristband for real-time interaction in VR, were also presented, as well as a trust concept for more data security.
How things will continue for Meta and what role the metaverse will really play in the future of our interaction remains to be seen, but Mark Zuckerberg is apparently certain and continues to invest…
