Meta’s Super Bowl commercial irritates viewers

Facebook’s parent company Meta has made a strong case for the Metaverse and their Quest 2 with their Super Bowl commercial this year. The feelings that are aroused with the spot are somewhere between nostalgia and fear, as you follow the life journey of an animatronic dog, as we know them from the horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s.

In the spot, an arcade with animatronics band is closed forever and the fuzzy dog, after a brief stopover in a pawnshop, finally ended up in the trash compactor. So what does this spot have to do with the Metaverse or with Quest 2?

The dog is finally rescued from the trash compactor and ends up in a VR exhibition where he gets his Qest 2 put on. This is how his journey into the virtual reality of Meta begins. Whether this spot really makes you want the headset or the fear of meeting animatronic figures there rises is not quite clear to me, but one thing can be said about it. The spot was…interesting.
