The new camera sensors from Sony have their own artificial intelligence

SONY is taking a new path with its new camera sensors and, thanks to built-in AI processing, not only enables lower processing latency but also higher data protection.

With the new IMX500 and IMX5001 sensors, the technology giant is breaking new ground and offers a complete package of AI data processing directly below the image sensor, which can process and evaluate acquired information directly. These new sensors are used, for example, in surveillance cameras, but also in cameras in warehouses or shops where there is a need for optimisation.


“The “Intelligent Vision Sensors” open up new possibilities for the development of AI-compatible cameras. They can support a wide range of retail and industrial equipment applications and facilitate the design of optimal cloud-based systems.”

The artificial intelligence stored directly in the sensor eliminates the need for costly transport of image data to the cloud or an external AI chip, which not only ensures greater efficiency and reaction speed, but also data protection.

The last aspect, which is often mentioned in connection with AI analyses and evaluations, is due to the fact that the sensor does not have to pass on the original image data at all due to the direct processing of the data, but can only output the results as metadata.

SONY’s system is designed very flexible and can be adapted to the task at hand. For example, thermal images can be generated or the artificial intelligence can detect empty shelves in stores or warehouses and pass on the corresponding information.

Through this direct processing of the artificial intelligence in the cameras’ components, Sony is thus taking a completely new approach to image analysis and offering a conceivable solution to the issue of data protection. Further information on the chip is available in the press release.
