Chinese news agency presents Artificial Intelligence news anchor

Artificial Intelligence is on the advance. The presentation of Google’s Duplex has shown where the journey of artificial intelligence can go. But not only the search engine giant is working on the future. In 2017, China announced that it wanted to become the world’s leading force in Artificial Intelligence. One step along this path is the AI news anchor introduced this week.

Xinhua, a state-owned Chinese media company, and Sogou, a Beijing-based search engine, presented a breakthrough in AI Avatar at the World Internet Conference this week. The AI-controlled anchor is designed to appeal to both mandarin-speaking viewers and English-speaking viewers. The model for the appearance of the avatar was the presenter Zhang Zhao.

In its presentation, the media company Xinhua particularly refers to the advantages of an artificial intelligence anchor. According to Xinhua, he can, for example, work 24 hours a day and spread current news faster and more personally than a pure text message.

“AI anchors have officially become members of Xinhua’s reporting team. Together with other anchors, they will bring you authoritative, timely and accurate news information in Chinese and English.”

The AI moderator has already appeared on some Xinhua online and social media products, that’s just the beginning, the team says. In the next step, he will read his texts as naturally as only a professional anchor can.

Together with the other moderators of the company, virtual anchors will support and report current and accurate news in Chinese and English in the future.

The two versions of the anchor (Chinese and English) are currently already being used on channels such as the public WeChat account, the TV website, two Weibo accounts and the network’s English and Chinese apps.
