If you want to predict the future, there’s really no better place to turn than to the people who always have their finger on the pulse – developers. They create the foundations for our future and are always in touch with the zeitgeist thanks to their interest in technology and IT.
But which trends do developers currently see as central and what do they focus on? A recent study by SlashData entitled “2022 State of the Developer Survey” provides insights into the topics that are currently attracting the most attention among the 20,000 international software developers.
The topics of blockchain, cryptocurrencies and NFTs stood out particularly clearly in the study. Now one or the other reader may be surprised, since the tech press is currently performing a small cancellation of the topics, but as with all innovations, there is always the so-called valley of tears before we will get to the true application.
In the SlashData survey, more than a third (34%) of the developers surveyed said that they are actively researching cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, Bitcoin and Co for their professional future and about 15% are even currently actively working on projects related to cryptocurrencies.
The potential of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs for short, also did not pass developers by in the survey. 11% are already actively working on their own NFT projects and 32% are just getting to grips with the technological aspects of the trend.
The topic of blockchain as a driver of crytho and NFT is also an important trend for developers and so, according to the survey, 30% are informing themselves about the building blocks of a blockchain and its possibilities.
But it’s not just blockchain technologies that are on the rise. In addition, the developers surveyed see great potential in the metaverse and some are already actively engaged in initial projects. The former perennial favorite of AI-powered software development also remains in the top 5, helping developers shape the future.
In the report, for which developers from 166 countries were surveyed, topics such as mobile, industrial IoT, apps and cloud fall somewhat, but are still present among developers. However, the study shows in which IT area we can expect even more growth in skills in the coming years, which could mean exciting new projects at the same time.
