Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence to Improve Cyber Security

In today’s data-driven world, security is a central issue for all companies working with data. According to a study by the digital association Bitkom, Cyber Security is rated extremely highly by most managers and security managers. New technologies such as blockchain or artificial intelligence play a special role here.

Of the 503 industry representatives surveyed, two-thirds (67 percent) estimate the blockchain as a suitable technology for increasing their own IT security. Almost half of the respondents (48 percent) also see artificial intelligence as the potential to automatically detect anomalies in the network and initiate security measures.

Blockchain and the Cyber Security

If you take a look at Blockchain technology, it quickly becomes clear that it has high potential. With the decentralized storage and tamper-proof transfer of data, Blockchain has a high potential to securely manage electronic identities and control access.

To unbalance a blockchain, a hacker would need to have access to all data on the network. Since the technology is based on matching data and validating its real time, it can be millions of computers, each of which has a copy of some or all of the data stored. Since it is technically extremely unlikely that an attack would shut down an entire network, the so-called “nodes” would continue to run and record the data despite all efforts. For this reason, especially larger block-chain networks have a very low risk of being attacked.

Cyber security thanks to artificial intelligence

With the help of artificial intelligence, companies can detect deviations from regular user behavior in their data. Deep learning algorithms are able to quickly detect anomalies in the normal flow of data and treat them accordingly. Special AI applications for the prevention of data theft or manipulation can already automatically detect, analyze and fend off attacks today by recognizing and redirecting the hacker in the initial phase.

Many organizations are already beginning to use artificial intelligence to enhance their cyber security applications and protect themselves from more sophisticated hackers.

But technologies are not enough for the complete security of an IT system. Susanne Dehmel, member of the Bitkom management board, points out in the study that robust IT security management starts with well-trained employees. Companies should therefore combine the opportunities of new technologies with their skilled employees to create an unbeatable security team.
