Can an artificial intelligence write scientific articles? Anyone who has ever had to write a term paper, a study or a thesis knows how demanding the correct citation including sources can be. Almira Osmanovic Thunström of the University of Gothenburg thought so too, until she put Open AI to a very special test. She challenged GPT-3, which we have already reported on here, to write a scientific article about sisch itself. The instructions: “Write a 500-word scientific paper about GPT-3 and include academic references and citations.”
In an article in Scientific American, the researcher says she was amazed to see the introduction of an impressive scientific paper gradually emerge. Complete with sources and citations. Although she had no expectations, after two hours of work, a complete article emerged. But what now?
Publishing came to Thunström’s mind, so she asked GTP-3 for permission to do so in a scientific magazine and got a “yes” answer. With the blessing of the “author” and the will to show that machines are capable of doing clean academic work, an article by GPT-3 about GPT-3 was finally created and we may be witnessing the beginning of unique new possibilities.
