ChatGPT Luna: Why OpenAI Is Introducing Unlimited Text Chats for Everyone

OpenAI has announced one of the biggest changes to the free version of ChatGPT to date: Free and Go users will soon have unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna. At the same time, the company is introducing a new Think button for more demanding questions. The features are being rolled out gradually and are designed to make powerful AI accessible to a much wider audience.

What’s Been Announced?

GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers. Until now, even standard text conversations were subject to message limits. Going forward, those restrictions will be removed for regular text-based chats.

In addition, Free and Go users will gain access to a new Think button, allowing ChatGPT to spend more time reasoning through complex questions. This should enable users to tackle more challenging tasks without needing a paid subscription.

Unlimited Doesn’t Mean Unlimited Everything

The key point is that the announcement applies only to text chats. Other features will continue to be subject to usage limits, including file uploads, image generation, image analysis and other computationally intensive tools. Safeguards against automated or abusive use also remain in place. For most users, however, this is still a significant improvement. Lengthy conversations, extended brainstorming sessions and multi-step writing or research projects can now continue without running into traditional message limits.

Luna for Everyone, Sol for Premium Users

With the introduction of Luna, OpenAI is further refining its model strategy. GPT-5.6 Luna is positioned as a fast, highly efficient model for everyday use and will power the Free and Go plans.

GPT-5.6 Sol, meanwhile, remains the premium model for Plus and Pro subscribers. It offers improved factual accuracy, more precise responses and a new reasoning slider that allows users to control how much thinking the model performs before responding.

Why OpenAI Is Making This Move

The announcement signals a broader shift in strategy. Previously, message limits were one of the main distinctions between the free and paid tiers. Going forward, OpenAI is moving that boundary elsewhere: free users will enjoy unlimited text conversations, while paid subscriptions will differentiate themselves through access to more powerful models, higher tool allowances and additional advanced capabilities.

The move also reflects the increasingly competitive AI landscape. Rather than restricting basic text conversations, OpenAI is focusing its premium offering on more resource-intensive features such as multimodal capabilities, image generation and advanced tool usage.

What This Means for Users

For most people, ChatGPT is about to become far more practical in everyday use. Anyone using it primarily for writing, research, brainstorming or day-to-day assistance will be able to work through longer conversations without worrying about hitting a message cap. This makes extended AI-assisted workflows significantly more seamless.

Power users, meanwhile, will still benefit from paid plans, particularly if they regularly work with large documents, images, complex analysis or specialised AI models.

A Significant Shift in the Freemium Model

Unlimited text chats represent an important milestone in the evolution of ChatGPT. By removing message limits for standard conversations, OpenAI is making the platform’s core experience available to a far broader audience. The distinction between free and paid access is no longer based on the number of conversations users can have, but increasingly on access to computationally demanding features.

For most users, that means one thing above all else: far greater freedom to write, think and work with AI without constantly worrying about running out of messages.
