Ubisoft’s “Teammates” Project: When AI Teammates Become True Allies

What if your virtual teammate didn’t just react — but understood you? Didn’t just follow — but questioned and adapted? With “Teammates”, Ubisoft is exploring exactly that — opening a new chapter in the evolution of in-game characters.

This research project is focused on developing AI-driven NPCs that are more than just scripted followers. In a prototype shooter currently being tested by a few hundred players in a closed trial, Ubisoft is experimenting with companions that respond not only to spoken commands, but also to tone, intention, and the context of the game. These AI characters learn, develop behavioural patterns, show personality — and bring unpredictability, emotion, and immersion to the experience.

This new class of AI teammate isn’t just technically advanced — it’s narratively rich. Ubisoft highlights that dedicated writing teams craft distinct personalities for each character, complete with strengths, flaws, and backstories. Players can speak with them about tactics and objectives, but also about the game world, narrative, and even moral choices. These aren’t just companions — they’re characters in their own right.

Alongside these teammates, Ubisoft has introduced “Jaspar”, a personal AI assistant. Jaspar can guide players through missions, highlight important objectives, offer advice, and respond to voice commands. It’s designed to support players, especially newcomers, by easing onboarding and helping them navigate complex scenarios.

On the technical side, Ubisoft has developed its own middleware and API to integrate the system directly into its proprietary game engines. At the same time, the studio is putting a strong emphasis on safety: implementing safeguards to prevent hallucinations, toxic responses, and inappropriate behaviour. The goal is not only intelligent AI — but responsible AI.

What “Teammates” already makes clear is that the future of gaming could become more personalised, intuitive, and emotionally engaging. AI characters that listen, adapt, and improvise represent more than a technical leap — they signal a shift in how we experience digital worlds. And Ubisoft appears committed to leading that transformation.
