The new Gartner Hype Cycle for 2020 shows a world shaped by COVID-19. This year’s survey by the research institute again lists technologies that will have a significant impact on the economy, society and people over the next five to ten years. In this exceptional year, it includes technologies that will enable companies to regain society’s trust in the technology.
This year’s annual Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies looked at more than 1,700 unique technologies that will shape the world of tomorrow. According to Garnter, five trends are particularly prominent:
- Composite architectures
- Algorithmic trust
- Beyond silicon
- Formative artificial intelligence (AI)
- Digital me

Composite architectures
The current transformation requires agile and flexible companies. However, this has not only something to do with the processes, but with the entire enterprise architecture. Gartner points out that more flexible data structures are needed to react quickly to changing business requirements.
Composite architectures lead to increased business resilience and faster response times. Should a case such as the current pandemic occur again, faster restructuring and reactivation should be possible. The four core principles of this type of architecture are: Modularity, efficiency, continuous improvement and adaptive innovation.

Algorithmic Trust
The words “fake news” have become part of our everyday life. Data leaks, fake news and videos and deep fakes by AI have led to consumers and businesses being fundamentally critical of all information. Trust must become part of everyday life again. Algorithmic trust models guarantee the protection and security of data, the origin of assets and the identities of people and things.
Blockchain is an example of this trend, which is designed to ensure that information is not falsified or simply wrong. Other technologies that have emerged from this trend are# differential privacy, responsible artificial intelligence and explainable AI.
Â
Beyond Silicon
With “Beyond silicon”, Gartner is advancing technologies that require a component other than silicon. Current circuits quickly reach their physical limits, so DNA and biochemistry are used instead of silicon or quantum architectures for “DNA calculation and storage”, for example. The data is encoded into synthetic DNA strands for storage, and enzymes provide the processing capabilities through chemical reactions.
Biology also plays a role in this trend with the other technologies. For example, there are biodegradable carbon-based sensors and transistors.

Formative Artificial Intelligence
Formative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that changes dynamically in order to respond better to situations, some of which are very demanding. Such an AI can, for example, create new types of content (images, video, etc.) or modify existing content. This type of AI is already known from the early deep fake technologies that are currently in circulation. However, formative AI is also used beyond “fraud” for the discovery of drugs and the generation of synthetic data.

Digital me
Technology and people are growing closer and closer together. Digital tools are combined with human beings and new possibilities for digital representations of ourselves are emerging. Digital twins, as described in this trend, provide models of individuals who can represent people in both physical and digital space.
Technologies of this trend are for example Brain Machine Interfaces.
