The workplace of the future – from digitization and automation

Data will determine the jobs of tomorrow. In times of Big Data, data needs to be analyzed faster and more efficiently. In the coming decades, digitization and automation will play an increasingly important role. These are the trends of the workplace of the future.

Digitisation of the workplace

The potential for digital platforms and AI is almost boundless in the future. Many processes are automated. Jobs will change. Let’s take the medical industry, for example, while we are currently still often dependent on classical medical analysis methods, AI Healthcare plays a major role in the medical care of the future. Artificial intelligence systems are now able to detect and treat diseases better than any human being could ever do, as they are able to recognise patterns more quickly and draw appropriate conclusions. A future scenario that is therefore often called upon is that the doctor as we know him at the moment will soon no longer be needed. There will be new types of physicians who will have to be both data scientist and nurse at the same time, because the activity of nurses can be of unimagined importance, because machines, despite superior analysis, cannot put methods into the patient or show social competence.

Another trend that will determine tomorrow’s workplaces is augmented data discovery. It will gain momentum within the next two to five years and fundamentally change processes.
The method not only reduces the time needed to analyze the collected data, but also reduces the error rate. Employers and employees can thus design processes more efficiently, identify risks at an early stage and avoid them. By eliminating such problems, there is more time for strategic work and more thoughtful management decisions.
But it is not only in everyday office life or in the health sector that things will change. The customer business is also becoming digital. Through immersive media we can get to know the customer better in all areas. Data tells us more about consumer preferences, shopping habits and preferred way of addressing consumers. Through immersive technologies such as augmented reality in data glasses, the salesperson can have this knowledge right in the field of vision and offer customized service.

Skills at the workplace of the future

No matter how much automation advances, machines will not be able to compete with human intuition, judgement and empathy. With increasing automation, these soft skills will become even more important. In order to promote these skills in the workplace, companies can make them a prominent part of the innovation culture.

But contextualized intelligence and the ability to interpret the data generated by Big Data will also become increasingly important. Both in the human resources department, where employees are preselected by means of artificial intelligence, and in project and process management.

Companies must prepare employees for this workplace of the future at an early stage and communicate openly with them. They must listen to the questions that arise in the company and give employees the chance to help shape change. A culture of innovation and openness become a valuable asset in the organisation of tomorrow.
